Driving in a fairytale environment between the villages of Ladikos, Vasilika, Amalota and Syka we meet the Holy Monastery of Agathonos, at an altitude of 553 meters, on the slope of Mount Iti. Built around 14th-15th century, is a typical example of Byzantine style.
Oral tradition states that the old Monastery, where Saint Agathonas was practicing, located on the borders of the neighboring villages of Lychnos and Kastania, collapsed and the icon of the Virgin Mary disappeared to be found in a luminous cave. That was the spot, near its current location, where the old monastery was built around the 14 th – 15 th century.
After the death of Saint Agathon, the other monks named the Monastery after his name.
